I was there (from Oregon) as a visiting trip leader. I co-led a trip with Doug Gray from Indianapolis and got to meet Drew, Dudley Edmondson, and Roy Rodriquez. How utterly refreshing to look around the festival and see some faces that didn't look like mine. I'm a baby-boomer white guy. I commend field trip coordinator Mary Gustafson and the leadership of the RGV Fest. for bringing together such a diverse and talented group of leaders and striving to pitch a "bigger tent." I look forward to seeing some of "The Sky Dawgs" again next week when I will be back for this year's festival.Dave Ironshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13743807841259641532noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5581523302004148907.post-39645391982026627082011-10-24T21:27:00.239-04:002011-10-24T21:27:00.239-04:00Great post, Drew.

It's been frustrating, but I refuse to give up.
My husband and I can truly identify with your experience, as we are two birders of color in a large sea of white birders here.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5581523302004148907.post-4094231430109185462011-10-24T13:35:12.322-04:002011-10-24T13:35:12.322-04:00What a fabulous post. Keepin' it real....yes, sir!
I'm sharing this on my FB Wall, because all of my birder friends (99.99% white birders) need to read this. And think on it. Frankly, you saved my rear when it came to birds of concern in SC those years ago. I can toss a somewhat related experience in here as a mammal biologist studying big game in the west. Let's just say I wore the only skirt in the room at the first Boone and Crockett dinner I attended as a B&C fellow. My stories are numerous, including have the birth or my first child tossed up as "thats qhat happens when yoh forget to take your birth control pills!" My greatest obstacle is the economy, which has reduced our contact with students here at the Audubon Center at Francis Beidler Forest. Your speculation made me think back to the birder that was arrested: http://www.itemlive.com/articles/2010/01/12/news/news05.txt

The person was certainly a birder, and I'm not sure we can know if he was actually guilty of what he was accused of. When I read this story last year, though, it at least made me realize that I would hardly be accused of something like this if I had binoculars near houses. No one was "suspicious" of me on golf courses, they were mostly just curious about what I was doing. You're right that the experience is different. Keep on keepin' on :)Jesshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06548776590323669927noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5581523302004148907.post-69024585281893478302011-10-24T10:41:53.953-04:002011-10-24T10:41:53.953-04:00Super!
